Uric acid: the normal range, and what moves it
Uric acid is what your body is left with after it breaks down purines — building blocks that come partly from the food you eat and mostly from your own cells being replaced. Roughly two-thirds of it leaves through the kidneys. So the number on your report is not one thing; it is a balance between how much you make and how well you clear it. That is why two people eating the same thali can sit two points apart.
What is the normal uric acid range?
| Who | Usual range | What sets it |
|---|---|---|
| Adult men | 3.4 – 7.0 mg/dL | Rises through the teens and settles by the early twenties. |
| Adult women | 2.4 – 6.0 mg/dL | Oestrogen helps the kidney clear urate, which is why the ceiling sits lower. |
| Women after menopause | Drifts toward the male range | A value that is new for her may still be inside a general adult range. |
| Children under 12 | 2.0 – 5.5 mg/dL | Read against a paediatric range, never an adult one. |
| In pregnancy | Read only by the treating doctor | Uric acid moves through pregnancy and is interpreted with blood pressure and urine. |
Why is the range different for men and women?
Because clearance differs. Oestrogen makes the kidney let go of urate more freely, so women hold roughly a point less through their reproductive years and the reference ceiling is set lower to match. After menopause that advantage fades and the range drifts toward the male one. This matters when you compare reports at home: a wife and husband with the same 6.4 are not in the same place, and a report that lists one adult range for everybody will quietly mislead one of them.
What actually moves uric acid — food, or water?
Food moves it less than most people fear, and differently than they expect. The heavy hitters are organ meat, red meat, some fish like sardines and mackerel, beer and spirits, and anything sweetened with high-fructose syrup — cold drinks and packaged juices included. The purines in dal, rajma and sabzi behave far more gently in the blood, which is why the usual instinct to stop eating dal costs a lot of protein and buys very little.
Water is the other half of the story, and in Kanpur between April and July it may be the larger half. Urate leaves through urine. Turn up in a hot week short of fluid and the same production shows up as a higher number on a smaller volume.
Does a high uric acid mean I have gout?
Not on its own. Plenty of people carry a raised value for years without a single attack, and some attacks arrive at a value sitting inside the range. Gout is a clinical diagnosis made by a doctor from the joint, the history and the examination — the blood test supports that picture rather than making the call. A single high reading is a finding to explain, not a label to accept.
It is also worth reading uric acid beside the company it keeps. It tends to travel with weight around the middle, with blood pressure, with the fats in your blood and with liver fat, which is why it sits inside both our kidney and liver panels rather than being sold as a curiosity on its own.
Which test should I book in Kanpur?
Uric acid is part of the Kidney Profile (KFT) at ₹650, alongside urea, creatinine and electrolytes. The Kidney Panel at ₹999 is 9 tests — that profile plus CBC, urine routine, urine microalbumin, calcium and phosphorus — and it is the one that shows whether a raised urate is arriving with anything else. No fast is needed for uric acid itself. Report in about 6 hours,* and home collection is charged separately and varies by area. See all tests and prices →
What should I do next?
Food — ghar ka khana, tuned for the kidney's workload. Keep dal, keep sabzi, keep the roti. Move organ meat and red meat from weekly to occasional, treat beer as the drink that carries the most urate per glass, and take sweetened cold drinks out of the daily slot. Low-fat dairy and coffee sit on the friendly side. Nothing on your plate is banned.
Movement — steady, not punishing. Twenty to thirty minutes of walking most days, and keep fluid up around it. Crash dieting and long fasts push urate the wrong way, so slow beats dramatic here. If a joint is actively hot and painful, rest it and see a doctor rather than walking through it.
Habits — the ones you can date. A bottle of water on the desk instead of a plan to drink more. Every tablet on one list for your doctor, because water tablets and low-dose aspirin both raise urate. And a repeat on the date they give you, so you have two points instead of one — that line is what tells you what changed.
Every report is verified by Dr. Manju, MD Pathology, before release. Aira then explains each marker on WhatsApp in plain language and keeps your history, so your next uric acid is read against your own last one. Samples are barcoded at collection, analysers are calibrated, and the lab is registered under the UP Clinical Establishments Act.
