Normal blood sugar is under 100 mg/dL fasting, under 140 mg/dL two hours after a meal, and an HbA1c under 5.7%. A fasting sugar is ₹60 and an HbA1c is ₹550 at Apoorv Pathology in Kanpur, with every report verified by Dr. Manju, MD Pathology.

What counts as a normal blood sugar?

Four tests answer the same question from four angles, and almost every argument about sugar levels comes from comparing one person's number from one test with another person's number from a different one. Here they are together, in the units Indian reports print — mg/dL. If your report shows mmol/L instead, multiply by 18 to land back on this table.

Post-prandial and random sugar are not on our published price list yet, so they are rendered as blanks rather than guessed at — ask on WhatsApp and you will get the current rate before you book. Pregnancy uses different thresholds, set by your obstetrician.

What is a normal fasting blood sugar?

Under 100 mg/dL after 8 to 12 hours with nothing but plain water. This is the number your body holds when nothing is being digested, which is why it is the cleanest single reading you can take: no meal, no chai, no biscuit at the counter to explain it away.

Between 100 and 125 the report may print impaired fasting glucose, which sounds far heavier than it is. It means the overnight number sits above typical and below the line at which a doctor confirms anything. It asks for a retest and for attention to food, movement and sleep — not for an evening of searching. At 126 and above, a doctor takes over: they usually repeat the test on a second day, often with an HbA1c beside it, before saying anything at all.

Two things quietly ruin a fasting number. Fasting for sixteen hours instead of twelve, which can push it either way, and skipping a prescribed medicine to keep the fast, which is never worth it. Tell us your timings and we will plan the draw around them.

What should blood sugar be two hours after eating?

Under 140 mg/dL, timed from the first bite rather than the last. That detail matters more than most people are told: two hours after you started eating is the moment a healthy rise has come back down again, and measuring at ninety minutes or at three hours reports a different part of the curve entirely.

This is the reading that catches what a fasting test cannot. Plenty of people wake up at 95 and cross 180 after a plate of rice, and their body spends the larger part of the day above where it wants to be. If your fasting sugar looks fine, the post-meal number answers a different question — and whether it is worth taking is your doctor's call.

Eat what you normally eat for it. A test meal of two idlis when your usual lunch is rice, dal and a sweet at the end measures a day you did not live.

What does a random blood sugar reading tell you?

Less than the other three, and it is honest to say so. A random sugar is taken at any time with no preparation, so it carries no information about when you last ate — which means a normal result rules little out and a high one is a prompt rather than a conclusion. Its real use is speed. In a fever clinic or at a camp, a random reading tells a doctor whether to look further today.

A reading of 200 mg/dL or higher alongside classic symptoms — thirst that does not settle, passing urine far more often, losing weight without trying — is where a doctor stops treating it as a screening number. That is a conversation to have with them, not a conclusion to reach from a page.

Where does HbA1c fit, and why do the numbers disagree?

HbA1c is the share of your haemoglobin carrying sugar stuck to it. Red cells live about three months, so it averages that window and weights the last four to six weeks most heavily. It needs no fasting, cannot be moved by breakfast, and is the only one of the four that a single bad morning cannot distort.

Which is exactly why it disagrees with a fasting sugar sometimes. A fasting test reports one morning: a short night, a stressful week or an infection can lift it. HbA1c reports ninety days and shrugs at all three. When the two disagree, neither is lying — they are answering different questions, and a doctor reads them together.

Shakti's sample: HbA1c 5.9% — the watch zone, not a diagnosis. The February reading was 6.1, so the direction is downward. One reading is a dot; two make a line, and a line is what you can act on.

Shakti is 24, with a body age of 27 and an HbA1c that moved from 6.1 in February to 5.9 now. Same band both times, and the band is the least interesting thing about it. What changed is the slope, and the slope is what a second test buys you that a first one never can.

In a Smart Report, that line arrives written out: what the number means, what moved since the last test, and what usually comes next. Aira explains it over WhatsApp and coaches you through the ninety days after; she does not diagnose or prescribe. Dr. Manju, MD Pathology, verifies every report before it is released. Your sample is barcoded at the chair, run on calibrated analyzers and reviewed by a pathologist, and results are typically ready in about 6 hours* from a morning slot. The lab is registered under the UP Clinical Establishments Act.

*Typical timings for routine tests booked in a morning slot. Some specialised tests take longer — we tell you when you book.

If you want the whole picture in one draw, the Sugar/Diabetes Panel is ₹999 for 13 tests and includes the kidney and lipid lines that sugar tends to travel with. On its own, an HbA1c is ₹550, and there is more on how the numbers behave over years on the diabetes page.

Call 108 now — do not wait for a test
Confusion or drowsiness, breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, one-sided weakness, or vomiting that will not stop — with or without a high sugar reading — are emergencies. Call 108. Do not wait for a lab report and do not book a test first.

What should you do next?

Food. Ghar ka khana, in a different order. Dal and sabzi before roti or rice changes the size of the after-meal rise more than banning any single food does, and one katori of rice at night is fine when protein goes first. The 4 pm biscuit is usually the cheapest swap in the day: roasted chana, a boiled egg, whatever is already in the kitchen.

Movement. Ten to twelve minutes of walking after dinner does more for a post-meal number than forty minutes at 6 am, because it lands while the rise is still happening. It needs no gym and no shoes you do not own. Two short strength sessions a week give your muscles somewhere to put the sugar.

Habits. Sleep is a sugar marker wearing a disguise — short nights lift morning readings on their own. Retest an HbA1c at about 90 days rather than 30, because anything sooner is measuring the same red cells twice; a fasting sugar can be repeated much sooner. Keep the old report beside the new one, and take both to the same appointment.

Common questions

Under 100 mg/dL fasting, under 140 mg/dL two hours after a meal, and an HbA1c under 5.7% are the usual normal bands for adults. Between those bands and the diagnostic lines sits a watch zone, which asks for attention and a retest rather than alarm.
No. 110 mg/dL sits in the 100 to 125 watch band — above typical, below the 126 line a doctor uses to confirm diabetes. One reading is also just one morning. The usual next step is a repeat test, often with an HbA1c beside it, and a doctor's read.
8 to 12 hours, with plain water allowed. Chai with milk breaks the fast; water does not. Never skip a prescribed medicine in order to fast — tell the lab your timings instead and the sample can be planned around them.
A blood sugar test reports one moment. HbA1c reports an average of roughly three months, because sugar sticks to haemoglobin and red cells live about that long. A single stressful morning can move the first and cannot move the second.
A fasting blood sugar is ₹60 and an HbA1c is ₹550 at Apoorv Pathology. The Sugar/Diabetes Panel, 13 tests, is ₹999. Home collection is charged separately and the fee varies by area — we quote it when you book.
